Why Awakening is Important

The Mission of Awakening

Awakening is an adventure based orientation program that builds in its first year students a foundation for their college career by engaging them in all levels of the Hartwick community whilst empowering them to practice self reflection, develop personal courage and think critically.

Awakening is an adventuresome, fun way to begin to find your place and find your way at college. It is an optional six-day program occurring the week before school starts in August. As a personal orientation, Awakening is important because it can help you:

Make a smooth, effective transition into the new world of college

  • "I chose to do Awakening specifically because I wanted to take advantage of all Hartwick has to offer."--Cara Spadaccia '10

Make friends and create a support network within the Hartwick community

  • "The best thing was the incredible bond with my group."--Ben April '10
  • "The friendliness of the campus was one of the things that drew me to Hartwick, and I think that many of the students who go through Awakening perpetuate that friendliness."--Adam Travis '04

Build confidence and self-awareness

  • "I learned a lot about myself this week and I also have a clearer picture of who I want to be. "--Mandy Schmidt '11
  • "I learned that being myself is the way to be."--Sunil Mickelson '10

Develop the qualities needed to face the challenges of college

  • "Every experience teaches us something, this taught me tons that will help me through my life." – Amanda Gingue '06
