2012-13 Health and Dental Insurance
Health Insurance
Hartwick College, like countless colleges across the nation, continues to be impacted by the cost of healthcare. Recent analysis of our health plan experience confirms a significant rise in medical claims and prescription drug utilization which have a negative effect on premiums. Over the last few years, the College assumed the full increase to the rising health care cost without passing any portion of the increases along to our employees. During this period, the College budget absorbed premium increases of fifteen to sixteen percent depending on the plan. While we can no longer absorb the full increase, we have attempted to pass along a reasonable increase to our employees and will pick up the greater portion of the rate increase for the 2012-13 year.
The Shared Health partnership between Hartwick College and CDPHP continues to progress. As part of this multi-year commitment, we have offered a series of programs and activities for our employees and their families. You may have already participated in a personal health assessment and screenings, weight or stress management programs, or perhaps you recently partook in the worksite walking program and earned CDPHP LifePoints for your participation. The College will continue to develop an array of wellness initiatives tailored to the needs of Hartwick employees and focused on the goal of achieving a healthier workforce and reduced healthcare costs. Your engagement is vital and will help the College's work toward building a stronger and healthier Hartwick.
We will continue to offer the Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) health insurance options. There will be no adjustments to the plan design and no increase to plan co-pays or deductibles. New premiums will go into effect July 1, 2012.
Dental
The College will continue to work with ComTon, Inc. (TPA) to offer self-insured dental coverage. The current plan design will remain unchanged; however, there will be an increase in cost to this voluntary, self-insured plan. While utilization decreased slightly, family size has increased and once again actual claims have exceeded the premiums paid by participants, leaving the College to absorb the difference. New premiums will go into effect July 1, 2012.
