2013-14 Health and Dental Insurance

Health insurance continues to be a high cost item for Hartwick College, with the College's contribution projected at more than $1.8M for the 2013-14 plan year. The major factor contributing to our health insurance renewal includes the fact that for the past two years claims paid have exceeded premiums paid (medical loss ratio exceeding 100%). Other factors include an increase in prescription drug costs and fees related to the Health Care Reform legislation.

The College will retain CDPHP as our health insurance provider and will continue to offer both the Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) options. There will be a premium rate increase, as well as some changes to the plan design which will affect co-pays.

The PPO option will experience the following co-pay increases: Out-Patient Surgery co-pay will increase to $75; Emergency Room co-pay will increase to $75; Urgent Care co-pay will increase to $35; X-ray and Lab Service co-pays will increase to $40; Specialist Office Visit co-pay will increase to $40; and Tier 2 prescription drug co-pay will increase to $30; and Tier 3 prescription drug co-pay will incrase to $50. 

The EPO option will experience the following co-pay increases: Emergency Room co-pay will increase to $75; X-ray and Lab Service co-pays will increase to $50; and the Specialist Office Visit co-pay will increase to $50.

The monthly employee contribution effective July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014 will be:

The Shared Health partnership between Hartwick College and CDPHP is winding up its second year. Many employees and their families are seeing a return on their investment in wellness programming and participation in an array of activities. Through the CDPHP LifePoints Program, members can earn gift cards and merchandise valued up to $365 per year by participating in a variety of healthy activities including onsite CDPHP classes.

Employees have been helping to control costs by using the RX For Less Program, ordering maintenance drugs through mail order, requesting generic drugs when available and utilizing urgent care facilities rather than emergency rooms when appropriate. By becoming better consumers of health care and engaging in the wellness initiatives at Hartwick College, we can all work together to create a healthier community and reduce health care costs.

The College will continue to work with ComTon, Inc. to offer dental coverage. The current plan design will remain unchanged; however, there will be a small increase in cost to this voluntary, self-insured plan. The monthly employee premium effective July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014 will be:

Individual: $ 38.78
Individual + 1: $ 85.31
Family: $137.19
