Assessment at Hartwick College
Over the past three years, Hartwick has made incredible strides in its assessment effort, including the development and implementation of a College-Wide Assessment Committee and Plan, the development and passage of a new General Education curriculum and its associated student-learning outcomes, the establishment of the Committee for the Assessment of General Education, and the creation of the Assessment Support Coordinator to assist the committee in its efforts. We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of the members of the Hartwick community who have made these tremendous initiatives possible in such a short period of time. Our institutional assessment efforts are well under way.
In late September, the President unveiled a plan, adopted by the Board of Trustees, that provides an
“Organizing Principle” for the College. Simply stated, Hartwick College “will be the best at melding liberal education with experiential learning.” This Organizing Principle and Strategic Framework evolved from numerous conversations with students, alumni, staff, and faculty and represents a collective vision of Hartwick College grounded in our history and traditions. The Organizing Principle will serve to frame our ongoing institutional assessment efforts. President Drugovich explains that “The Organizing Principle and Strategic Framework focuses our decision-making around providing a quality experience in and out of the classroom. This principle will guide our collective work, which will include program, facility, and resource development. It will allow the smart, dedicated people of Hartwick to maximize our work on behalf of our students.”
Documents that are informing and framing our creation of the student experience at Hartwick College and our assessment initiative are the Middle States Team Evaluation Report from Spring 2009, Hartwick Student Experience External Review and Follow-Up Report, and Presidential Taskforce on Student Retention Final Report May 2009. Please note, you need a valid Hartwick ID to access these documents.
An Assessment Forum was held during the Conversation with the President on March 22, 2010 . A summary of the forum is available for downloading.
It is my hope that this page will be another cog in that wheel, moving us closer and closer to a transformative culture of assessment. If you have comments and/or suggestions for this page please send them to Lori Collins-Hall, Collins_hall@hartwick.edu, Assessment Support Coordinator.
