Professional Notes: May 2008

Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Bill Bjorness has been named coach of the Division III "North" team for the annual USILA North-South All-Star Game. He has recently completed his 10th season as the Hawks head coach. In his first nine seasons at Hartwick, he took his team to post-season play six times. He was a three-time All-American Lacrosse player at RIT and also played left wing on the 1983 National Championship Team. Bjorness' North squad will face off against it's South rivals, led by Dan Centrone, head men's lacrosse coach at Greensboro College. Eric Fekete of Quinnipiac leads the DI/II North team against Sonny Ziegler of Wingate University and the DI/II South squad. This year's North/South Senior All-Star Games will take place at Harvard Stadium, Friday, May 23rd (Memorial Day Weekend) as part of a triple header with the Boston Cannons game versus the Rochester Rattlers. The Division III game will face-off at 2 p.m., the Division I/II contest at 4 p.m., and the Cannons game at 7 p.m.. Assistant Professor of Education Elizabeth Bloom and her students have been busy of late. On March 1, she and several of her social studies methods students (Justin Kupinski '09, Joanna Rudy '09, Nathan Tweedie '09, and Patrick Murtagh '09) served as judges for the Catskill Regional Competition of National History Day at Stamford Central School. Bloom and the students worked alongside alongside in-service and retired professors, social studies teachers and college students from SUNY Oneonta's education program to judge contest entries. On March 31, honors students Christine LaTorre '10 and Melanie Hart '10 joined Bloom in a full-day interactive diversity training workshop sponsored by the Rennselaerville Institute and Minds On titled, "Unpacking the Invisible Backpack of Privilege." At the Queensbury Hotel in Glenns Falls, NY, middle-school students from area schools created videos on the subject for posting on YouTube. The videos may be seen here.

Assistant Professor of History Vicki Howard's article, "The Biggest Small-Town Store in America: A Case Study of the Independent Retailer, 1899-1990s" is forthcoming in the September 2008 edition of Enterprise & Society: The International Journal of Business History. The article, like much of Howard's current scholarship, focuses on the history of Bresee's Department Store in Oneonta. In addition, Howard chaired a panel titled "Mass Retailing" at the Business History Conference held April 10-13 in Sacramento, CA.

Hartwick Cross Country Coach Dereck Treadwell won the SADD Run For Safety on Sunday, April 6 in Oneonta. Treadwell completed the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes and one second, besting the second-place finisher by more than a minute and a half.

Assistant Professor of Art Joseph Von Stengel performed his "MAshUp, RE-Mix Digital Media Show" at the LIT Lounge in New York City on Tuesday, April 8. The audio/visual show was performed in conjunction with the band Finn Riggins of Haily, Idaho. Von Stengel reprised the performance on April 12 at The Radio Bean in Burlington, VT.
