The Who, What, and Where of Sygate

Hartwick College has adopted Symantec’s Sygate Security Agent for network access control (NAC), which contributes to the security of our network. Sygate is a managed personal firewall. It offers you protection against computer threats and allows Hartwick College to manage what types of activity are allowed on different parts of the network.

If software on your computer attempts to contact the Internet, or something on the Internet is attempting to connect to your computer, Sygate will prompt you for your permission. If the software is something you are familiar with and allow, then you can allow it and can tell Sygate not to ask you again (about that software). If you are not sure what it is, the best practice would be to say no. Contact the Technology Services Center (x4357) with any questions concerning Sygate.

Sygate will determine who you are (student, staff or faculty member), where you are (residence halls, academic areas such as a classroom) and what you are doing (searching the web, using IM, downloading music), and will allow or disallow the activity based on a matrix of rules set at Hartwick College. The following table is designed to give you some basic information as to how Sygate affects students on different parts of the campus using their Hartwick-issued laptop or their own personal computer with the Sygate Security Agent installed.

* IM can be disruptive in the classroom, and music and video downloading use excessive network resources. Neither is allowed for students on the academic network.
