What if I bring a different laptop?

What if I bring a different laptop?

Hartwick students are often on the go. Some travel to other continents with their peers and professors to study during January Term. Others have an internship off campus or undertake a practical-learning experience with classmates in communities near or far. When the sun is up, most Hartwick students are on the move. Our long-standing respect for mobility and information technology means that learning is best served if each student owns a personal laptop computer.

The College strongly recommends that students purchase a laptop computer, complete with applications and networking software, from our approved reseller. The purchase of a laptop from the Hartwick Recommended Laptop Program has many advantages.

Although we think that you will be best served by our recommended laptop program, the Hartwick College Technology Resource Center (TRC) will facilitate students' use of laptops of their own choosing if those laptops meet the College's minimum requirements (see below) for operating system, networking, anti-virus, and other software.

If you do not buy one of the recommended machines, the following specifications will guide you in choosing an alternate machine which is not supported by the College.

  Minimum Better
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate
Productivity Software Ability to create and edit file types commonly used in Microsoft Office Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 or 2010 (for Windows machines) or Microsoft Office 2008 or 2011 for Mac
Anti-Virus Software Your computer must run anti-virus software purchased through Hartwick. That software is included with the recommended laptops. If you are not buying a recommended laptop, you should use free anti-virus software or a trial version of commercial anti-virus software until you arrive on campus, so that your computer is protected at all times.
Network Access You must purchase Hartwick College's standard security software bundle in order to connect to the Hartwick network. This software can be purchased through the College's eMarketplace in advance. We will provide installation for the software bundles during your "Hartwick—Getting Online" during Welcome Weekend.
Network cable Category 6 Ethernet cable

The College also strongly recommends purchasing the maximum extended manufacturer’s warranty and the maximum extended accidental damage protection plan.

We cannot guarantee that every computer can be made to connect reliably to the Hartwick network. If reasonable efforts fail, the price of the network bundle will be refunded, and the student will need to arrange a different way to meet his/her computing needs—for instance, by obtaining or renting a different computer or using the computer labs.

We will provide free troubleshooting for students' access and use of Hartwick College-supported applications (e.g, Blackboard, WebAdvisor, Microsoft Office, and SPSS).

Laptops that are not purchased from the Hartwick Recommended Laptop Program do not include on-site service.

What if I don’t bring a laptop?

Students who arrive at Hartwick without a laptop computer can use the public use machines in the library and the computers in Hartwick’s computer labs, as available, during normal building hours. Some courses require use of a laptop in the classroom. If you find that you need one for a particular course or project, you can rent one (as available) from the Technology Resource Center (TRC).

If you have any questions about technology at Hartwick, please contact the Technology Resource Center (TRC) at technology@hartwick.edu or call 607-431-4357 (HELP).
