E-mail and Network Storage Quotas

E-mail Mailbox Quotas

Do you know how much your e-mail mailbox will hold? This table lists the maximum mailbox size for different types of accounts:

Account type Mailbox capacity
(on the server)
Mailbox warnings
begin at
Sending is
prohibited at
Students & alumni 40 MB 25 MB 33 MB
Faculty & staff 80 MB 50 MB 70 MB
Other accounts 40 MB 25 MB 33 MB

Warnings are set low so that your mailbox is less likely to close suddenly when you receive a large message.

E-mail message size limit

Have you tried to send a message with attachments, and the message failed to be delivered? A single e-mail message (including attachments) can be no larger than 10 MB. Messages sent to a system distribution list cannot be larger than 2 MB. To avoid message failure, check your message size (with all attachments) before sending.

File Server Space

Do you know how large your M: drive is? All Hartwick students, faculty, and staff have file space on the server Einstein.

Account Type M: Drive Capacity
Students & Alumni 100 MB, warning at 90 MB
Faculty & Staff 200 MB, warning at 180 MB
Other Accounts 100 MB, warning at 90 MB

At Hartwick this space is commonly referred to as your M: drive. It should already be mapped on your computer, but, if not, map a network drive to \\einstein.hartwick.edu\username (where 'username' is replace by your own Hartwick username). For assistance, please contact Ric Chrislip. Phone: 607-431-4189; E-mail: chrislipr@hartwick.edu.

Need more storage space? A request for additional storage space on Hartwick's servers can be made through the Technology Services Center, 607-431-4357. Students should have academic reasons for such requests and written support from their faculty member or academic advisor. All requests are subject to availability of storage space and suitability to be on a network drive, and in some cases fees may apply.

Departmental Shares

Departments and other organizations can have shared space set up for them on the file server Einstein. Note that space quotas are allocated to the user, not to the department or shared folder. To request creation of a share, please contact Ric Chrislip. Phone: 607-431-4189; E-mail: chrislipr@hartwick.edu.

We recommend that all users establish a backup plan. If you have additional questions, need help developing a data backup plan, or lack the hardware to do backups, call the TRC at 607-431-4357.
