Question: Does Hartwick offer summer courses?
Answer: Hartwick generally offers several summer courses. Last summer, for example, two courses were conducted in June at Pine Lake: ‘Field Research in Archaeology’ and ‘Writing Spiritual Autobiography.'
I imagine that information on this summer’s courses (including cost, dates, etc.) will be available sometime prior to pre-registration. As student interest increases, I feel sure that the number of courses also will increase!
Although the Nursing Department also offers summer courses, they are restricted to eligible Nursing majors.
Question: I have a question for you. I live in New Res 1 (Oyaron) and my room is in the end of the wing. To a lot of us it seems that the garbage truck shows up at 6:30 in the morning, which wouldn't be bad, but he proceeds to spend five minutes banging the dumpster around until everyone is woken up by it. So my question is: why can't the garbage trucks show up at 8 or even 8:30 and allow students to sleep peacefully instead of making a ruckus outside our window at 6:30 in the morning? Thanks, Sleepy new reser
Answer: I’m afraid that this is one of life’s conundrums—why, indeed, don’t companies send their garbage trucks out at a more reasonable hour? I imagine that it has something to do with wanting to get their job done (and the large trucks off the street) before the day’s traffic begins—but the truth lies with those garbage collection companies.
If it’s any consolation, you and your fellow students are not the only individuals who are affected by this early-morning custom. During my constitutionals around the city, I see that garbage tends to be picked up very early in Oneonta also (and no doubt in other cities!).
Question: Charlotte, I was told my freshman year that the ATM in Dewar was free for students. I deceptively believed this. However, now I am getting charged 2 dollars every time I use the ATM. Is this because I don't belong to a credit union and instead use a chain bank?
Answer (amended): Per Student Accounts, Wilber National Bank does NOT charge a fee for the use of this machine--but one's own bank may charge a fee. Generally, if one uses an ATM that is not affiliated with the bank with which one has accounts, there may be fees charged by the ATM as well as the home bank. In this case, however, the ATM in Dewar does not charge a fee.
I must say that this concept--obtaining money from machines--is another development that is amazing to me. Just think--in my day we actually had to visit the bank and speak to tellers to withdraw funds!
Question: Dear Charlotte, I noticed that there is a distinction between the Hartwick Honors Program and the Hartwick Honor Society. Would you tell me the requirements for the Hartwick Honor Society?
Answer: The Hartwick College Honor Society is open to new faculty and staff who have previously been inducted into chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi at other colleges and universities. In addition, each spring the members review graduating seniors and offer invitations to eligible students (usually in the top 5-10% of the class).
You may read more information on the Web site about the Hartwick College Honor Society.
Question: Hi Charlotte, I live in Saxton and we are not allowed to loft our beds. How come? I've asked several of our RAs and they don't know why--just that we can't. I know there aren't enough bed frames to loft all of the beds, but not everyone wants them done. Couldn't it be on a first-come, first-served basis? I know that in several of our lounges there are extra bed frames and pins that could be used for lofting. Thanks!
Answer: A decision was made last summer to discontinue allowing lofted beds. Traditionally, each Fall Term there was a very large number of requests made to Facilities for lofted beds (up to 400!) and it was simply impossible for Facilities to accommodate all those requests in an equitable and timely manner. The lack of adequate bed parts to accommodate all requests also contributed to this decision.
