SOAR

Start Out Academics Right
For many students, high school grades and standardized test scores do not accurately reflect their true potential. Start Out Academics Right, or SOAR, is a five-week summer program that gives these students a chance to demonstrate their potential while earning credits toward a Hartwick degree & gaining valuable academic skills to better prepare them for college-level work.

In order to qualify for admission to Hartwick through SOAR, selected students are invited to a required on-campus interview. Those who are accepted into the program must successfully complete the summer program from July 7 to August 10, 2012. Students who are successful in SOAR by earning a C or better in all course work, participating in required programming, and adhering to the College's Code of Conduct, are formally admitted to the College and will matriculate with their fellow classmates in the fall.

SOAR Optional
A limited number of accepted students will be permitted to enroll in the SOAR program on a voluntary basis. This is a great opportunity to earn five college credits, meet other students, and learn the ropes of college life before starting the fall semester. If you are an accepted student and interested in joining SOAR, please contact the Admissions office at 888-HARTWICK or request a SOAR interview online.

What kind of academic support will you receive?
SOAR students are provided a wide range of academic support services, from Academic Success Workshops to peer tutoring sessions and required study halls. We expect our SOAR students not only to succeed, but also to excel in their studies, to soar above their classmates, and to serve in key leadership roles during their years at Hartwick.

What about after class?
We'll make sure there's plenty to do when you're not in class or completing homework assignments. In addition to programs on campus, students are able to explore local attractions such as nearby Cooperstown and Howe Caverns. Don't forget everything that Oneonta has to offer, too.

What happens after SOAR?
Upon successful completion of the summer component of SOAR, students continue to receive academic support throughout the academic year. SOAR students meet individually with Director of SOAR Jen Morgenstein periodically throughout each term to discuss academic progress. Students participate in peer tutoring, use the Writing Center, and meet one-on-one with support staff throughout the year. All first-year students at Hartwick also have a WICK 101 instructor who acts as an academic coach. Coaching meetings occur twice a semester and WICK 101 meets weekly. Hartwick's Office of the First Year Experience provides support and guidance to all first-year students. 93% of SOAR students joing Hartwick College in the fall.

Cost of the Program
The SOAR Program's all-inclusive cost of $4,000 covers tuition, room, and board for five weeks, academic support services, all trips, events and special events, books and supplies.
