Duffy Proposal Guidelines

Successful applicants for a Duffy Scholarship must submit 4 copies of:

  • Duffy Scholarship Application form (can be obtained in the PSGE Center).
  • A written proposal describing in detail your motivation and plans for an independent/directed study, minimum 750 words. Collateral material can be included. The proposal also must include a reference as to how you propose to share your experience with other students when you return to Hartwick. This can be fulfilled in a variety of ways, through presentations in class or to clubs, photo exhibitions, etc.
  • A faculty recommendation form that includes a statement of support for your project and a personal recommendation. This recommendation form must come from the faculty member who will be your supervisor for the independent/directed study.
  • A detailed budget that includes airfare, in-country transportation, housing, food, and any appropriate miscellaneous expenditures. NOTE: The scholarship will cover legitimate, project-related expenses up to a total of $5,000.
  • A declaration of your passport and visa status including 1) whether you have a passport, 2) the country of origin of your passport, 3) expiration date of your passport, and 4) whether your proposal requires an entry visa. Please provide a photo copy of your passport documentation.
  • A completed independent/directed study application.

Additional material to be collected by the Committee:

  • Confirmation of financial need from the Financial Aid office.
  • Confirmation from the Registrar's office that your GPA is a 3.0 or above.
  • If your project involves research of human subjects, written documentation of your IRB process status from the Institutional Review Board Committee. Please note that all scholarship recipients must recieve confirmation from the IRB Committee prior to receiving any travel funds.
