England: Shakespeare's England

This course introduces students to the England of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, with the aim of enriching students' reading of early modern English literature. To uncover what London hides of its distant past, students will explore the key venues of Elizabethan London: the old walled City, with its ceremonies and squalor; the entertainment district of Bankside, across London Bridge; and the Court at Westminster and elsewhere, with its strategic displays of power and opulence. Students will not simply study the past reverently, but will inquire how Londoners negotiate the tension between preserving their heritage and building a city responsive to its inhabitants. In addition to two weeks in London, students will spend three or four days touring Shakespeare's native Warwickshire and attending plays by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
