Timeline for Choosing a Major
Because all Hartwick students must declare a major by the second semester of their sophomore year, it is helpful to have a basic timeline so that no important step is missed along the way. Keep in mind that this process does not end once you have chosen a major!
Freshman Year
- Self-Assessment.
- Research various careers and majors by taking courses in majors and visiting Career Services or the Office of Advising & Registration.
- Volunteer or work in a field of interest.
- Participate in the Binghamton Job Shadow Day.
- Attend workshops and programs sponsored by various departments on campus.
Sophomore Year
- Join clubs and organizations.
- Take classes in majors that interest you.
- Volunteer.
- Talk to upperclassmen in various majors to get a feel for various courses and their plans relative to their major after college.
- Participate in the Binghamton Job Shadow Day.
- Talk to Career Counselors and Advising staff.
Junior Year
- Talk to seniors to see what they are planning to do after college.
- Get to know professors in your major. They often have opportunities to do research or connections to internships and jobs in your field.
- Participate in an internship to supplement your classroom knowledge.
- Have meetings with an advisor to ensure that you are on the right track.
- Consider going on the MetroLink Job Shadow Program.
- Begin thinking about and researching graduate schools if you are interested in pursuing additional education after Hartwick.
Senior Year
- Visit the Office of Career Development & Education office early to begin your job- search strategies.
- Talk with as many people as possible in your areas of interest.
- Do an internship in your major or career field.
- Participate in mock interviews with Career Counselors.
- Keep updated on on-campus recruiting and information sessions.
- Begin applying for graduate school, as deadlines are usually in January and early February.
- Find professors or administrators willing to serve as references.
