Which Presentation Type is Best for You?

Use this table to determine which presentation option is best for you!

IF YOU:

THEN SELECT:

  • Are comfortable speaking to larger groups?
  • Can explain your project’s goals, methods, and results in about 15 minutes?
  • Need to show several pictures/graphs to summarize your project’s methods and results?

ORAL PRESENTATION

  • Are comfortable speaking to or performing for larger groups?
  • Want to read a written project or perform a play, musical composition, or dance number that you or a group of students have written?

READING OR PERFORMANCE

  • Are comfortable speaking to people on a one-on-one basis?
  • Would like less time constraint on explaining your project, and don’t mind repeating your explanation several times over the course of an hour?
  • Can best explain your project with a small number of pictures, graphs, or 2-D artwork?

POSTER PRESENTATION

  • Are comfortable speaking to people on a one-on-one basis?
  • Would like less time constraint on explaining your project, and don’t mind repeating your explanation several times over the course of an hour?
  • Will be using a computer, microscope, scientific specimens, archaeological specimens, or samples of your 3-D artwork in your presentation?

TABLE PRESENTATION

  • (Or a group of students) would like to demonstrate a skill or analytical technique that you learned in class?
  • (Or a group of students) like to conduct an academic simulation used in one of your classes?
  • (Or a group of students) like to conduct a panel session or group discussion about a topic related to a class?

PANEL, CLASS DEMONSTRATION, SIMULATION, OR GROUP DISCUSSION

If you have any additional questions as you select your presentation option and list your presentation requirements, please first contact the faculty mentor whose name you will include on your entry form and/or someone in your department who can more fully explain how a particular kind of presentation works in your field. If you have further questions that absolutely cannot be answered by your professors/project advisors, please send your question to showcase@hartwick.edu, or ask the Showcase staff in the Office of Academic Affairs at extension 4136.

*Poster Printing
You must consider the following for creating your poster: Currently, the price for poster printing is approximately $2.25/sq.ft (price as of 11/03/09). Poster size is limited to 40 inches on any one dimension (height or width). Remember to proofread and double check your document size so that it will print properly on the poster printer. You must reserve a time to have your poster printed. A sign-up sheet with a limited number of time slots will be available in The Center for Experiential and Integrative Learning (1st floor of Golisano). Time slots will be allocated on a first come-first served basis, so please plan accordingly. If you have questions, please contact Gladys Freeland at x-4249.
