Each year approximately 60 transfer students enter the College. While some colleges and universities review transfer applications only after the first-year students have been selected, the admissions office at Hartwick College reviews transfer applications on a rolling basis and reserves spaces each semester specifically for these students.
Transfer candidates are individuals who have matriculated and received academic credit from another institution and/or those individuals who left the former institution mid-semester without receiving academic credit. Our transfer students come from both two- and four-year colleges. Hartwick College welcomes applications from qualified students who wish to transfer from either two- or four-year institutions.
To be eligible, you must hold a high school diploma or General Education Diploma, have at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (note, however, that a GPA of 2.0 or higher does not automatically guarantee acceptance to the College), and you must be in good academic and social standing at the current or last institution attended. Admission is selective.
Upon inquiring to Hartwick College, Donna Johnson, Senior Associate Director, will work with you through both the transfer application and enrollment processes. You may contact her directly at email@example.com or at 607-431-4161 with any questions you may have concerning transferring to Hartwick.
Note that the admissions process is different for international students.
An admissions interview is not required, although it is highly recommended. We view the interview as an informational tool for both the admissions office and the transfer applicant. In an interview situation, the applicant may be able to explain more fully his or her unique set of circumstances and desire for transfer. Because we try to personalize the application process, we like to be able to put a face with the name on the application.
Art & Music Program Applicants
Applicants intending to declare a major in art must provide a supplemental portfolio. The faculty of the department of art and art history will review the portfolio of a prospective major prior to acceptance into the major. Entering students may submit a slide portfolio consisting of 10-20 slides of their work. Slides should accompany the application and will be forwarded to the department of art. Students may also contact the art department at 607-431-4825 to arrange a portfolio review. Notification of acceptance into the major or suggestions for further work prior to acceptance into the major will be sent directly from the department. In either case, admission to the College is based on a total review of the transfer applicant's qualifications, not the portfolio alone.
If you are planning to pursue music as a major field of study you are required to have an audition. Auditions are held periodically throughout the academic year both on and off campus. To make arrangements, you should contact the music department at 607-431-4800. Admission to the College is based on a total review of the transfer applicant's qualifications, not the audition alone.
Previously Accepted Students
If you were previously accepted as a first-year student to Hartwick but chose to attend another institution, you must send a letter to the admissions office requesting that your application be re-activated and indicate that you wish to be considered for transfer admission for a specific term of entry. Upon receiving the letter, the admissions office will send you a transfer application package. If there have been no changes in your personal information, the first part of the application does not have to be completed a second time. However, you must submit the Dean/Academic Advisor Evaluation, a Professor Recommendation, a final high school transcript, college transcripts, and an essay as to why you wish to transfer to Hartwick College. While your previous admission to the College will be in your favor, it does not guarantee admittance to the College as a transfer applicant.
The admissions office phone number is 888-HARTWICK (888-427-8942) or 607-431-4150; the fax number is 607-431-4154; the e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org. For more admissions information you may complete the request form.
