The boys' basketball camp is again under the direction of Hartwick men's basketball coach Tim McGraw and assistant coaches Chris Connolly and Keith Thompson. Designed to enhance the skills of players of all ages, the camp includes drills to improve fundamentals, competitive age-group games and daily lectures on different facets of the game. Shooting, passing, ball-handling, screening and pivoting are key fundamentals stressed during the camp.

Special attention is given to each age group, with older campers receiving advanced instruction in game situations and post-up play.

The possibility of a team camp will be offered at night, based on interest. Please call coach McGraw at 607-431-4770 if you have a team interested.

A college player or high school coach will be the camp's guest speaker.

McGraw is in his third season as Hartwick's men's basketball coach. He spent eight years as assistant coach for the Hawks. McGraw, a 1988 graduate of Hartwick, holds 10 individual school records.

Connolly and Thompson will be the co-directors. Several talented high school and college coaches will be on staff.

Day Camp* - $100

The main goal of the girls' basketball camp is to help each athlete improve her individual basketball skills and knowledge. All facets of the game will be taught, with time provided each day for individual instruction.

Campers will be divided into teams based on age group and skill level. Staff coaches will teach fundamental skills along with team concepts. Games each day will enable campers to work on personal improvement in team situations.

Primary skills taught during the camp include shooting, dribbling, passing, post-play, and defensive concepts. Campers will also learn team offense and defense.

While the camp provides athletes with training in a wide variety of basketball skills and allows for significant team play, individual improvement for each camper is stressed.

Campers should have fun on and off the court, as special activities are planned each evening.

Hartwick women's basketball coach Daphne Thompson directs the camp. She is currently in her ninth season with the Hawks and has a 137-72 record. She has led Hartwick to four NCAA Tournament appearances.

A graduate of the University of Delaware, Thompson was a four-year player for the Division I Blue Hens, and served as a team captain as a senior.

She has worked at a variety of camps for the past nine years, including the Delaware Blue Hens basketball camp, the Future Stars International Camp, and the West Point Girls' Camp.

NOTE: Two- and three-week sessions are available

In its 22nd summer, the Hartwick competitive swimming and diving camp is set to provide male and female swimmers ages 8 to 18 an opportunity to develop skills and techniques under the guidance of a highly trained coaching staff. Special one-, two- and three-week sessions are available for those swimmers seeking an extra competitive edge. Enrollment is limited to ensure an optimal training and instructional environment.

The first session from July 8-14 and third session from July 22-28 feature stroke technique camps, with the third week to also feature a diving camp. These camps enable competitive swimmers to develop skills and techniques in starts, turns, individual medley and competitive strokes. The competitive diving camp concentrates on technical improvement in 1- and 3-meter springboard diving.

The second session from July 15-21 will feature a sprint/distance camp that emphasizes conditioning and proper training of the major energy systems.

Designed for serious swimmers, the camp teaches the latest in swimming techniques in a fun-filled setting. Time is provided for relaxation and the program includes a pizza and movie night, as well as a trip to a local state park.

The camp will help swimmers learn about both the mental and physical aspects of race preparation. Training includes lactose tolerance, anaerobic threshold, maximum oxygen consumption, and speed and race pace training. Campers ages nine and under follow a meaningful but less technical schedule.

The camp also focuses on dry-land workouts and mental focus skills, including relaxation and visualization. Stroke work and analysis of above- and below-water video are also part of the schedule.

Meetings on the psychology of swimming, nutrition, dry-land training, weight training, and understanding swimming workouts are another feature of the camp.

Speeches by swimmers and coaches from the national and Olympic levels enhance the campers' experience. Respected USS, YMCA, high school, and college coaches provide individual guidance and instruction throughout the camp. Enrollment limit (1 to 6 ratio) guarantees individual attention and frequent feedback.

Dale Rothenberger, Hartwick's men's and women's swimming coach, directs the camp. In 16 seasons at Hartwick, Rothenberger has developed the Hawks' teams into regional and national competitors. He has coached more than 40 All-Americans and a two-time national champion while at Hartwick.

The camp is available for two one-week sessions, or campers may choose to participate in both sessions.

Dribbling, shooting, heading, tackling, trapping, and goalkeeping are among the individual skills the camp teaches, along with group and team tactics. Small group structure assures that each camper will receive individual instruction from the staff.

Morning sessions focus on functional training that reflects individual and group situations pertaining to the game. Afternoon sessions focus on collective tactics, team preparation, and small-sided games. Evening games will give players the opportunity to put their new skills to test during full-sided games.

Jim Lennox, Hartwick's men's soccer coach since 1976, directs the camp. He is assisted by a talented group of coaches, including professional players from the U.S. and England.

Lennox has led the Hartwick soccer program for the last 24 seasons. His 1977 team won the NCAA Division I National Championship. His teams have reached the Final Four five times.

Lennox is recognized as one of the top soccer coaches in the United States--at any level. He holds a United States Soccer Federation "A" coaching license. He was the head coach for the U.S. team at the 1991 and 1993 World University Games, and coached the U.S. National "B" team in 1989. In all, Lennox was a national team coach for more than 60 games for the U.S.

Gregory Moss-Brown, Hartwick's assistant soccer coach for the past five years, is the camp's associate director. A two-time All-American as a player at Hartwick from 1983 to 1986, Moss-Brown played professional soccer in Portugal from 1989 to 1991 and trained with the Trinidad and Tobago World Cup Squad in preparation for the 1990 games.

Sunday, July 29 through Thursday, August 2
Commuter - $210

The field hockey camp is designed to help players improve their fundamental skills, expose them to new strategies and increase their knowledge and enjoyment of the game. In addition to drill work and discussions, the camp will feature competitive games each evening.

Hartwick's All-Weather (AstroTurf®) Field provides the ideal playing surface for the camp. In the summer of 1997 the turf was resurfaced out of a new AstroTurf 8 surface.

Camp staff members will instruct players in the current fundamentals and strategies of field hockey. Stickwork and small team games will be used to stress the concepts and skills required to become a better player. A goalkeeper coach will instruct goalies in the key elements of that position.

The camp also includes special activities, including movies, a pizza party, and an ice cream party.

The camp is directed by Hartwick College head coach Anna Meyer. In 13 seasons, Meyer has built Hartwick's field hockey team into a national contender. She has a 175-80-3 record and six trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Meyer was the National Coach of the Year in Division III in 1996.

Meyer is assisted by associate camp director Cathy Foto, the head field hockey coach at Colgate University. Foto's Division I Red Raiders won their first Patriot League title in 1996, earning Foto league Coach-of-the-Year honors. Colgate had an unbeaten regular season in 1997.

As a player, Foto led Ithaca College to the 1982 NCAA Division III championship and earned first-team All-American honors.

The Hartwick volleyball camp will be under the direction of Louise Lansing. Lansing has been the head coach of the Hartwick womens' volleyball team for seven seasons.

Lansing has led the Hawks to the NYSWCAA Tournament in two of the last four years. She has worked in the Hartwick athletic department since 1982.

Younger campers will be tutored in basic fundamentals of volleyball. Serving, returning, setting, and blocking will all be taught.

Older campers with more volleyball experience will receive coaching in the area of game preparation and strategies. Campers will receive instruction in multiple offenses and defenses, as well as serving strategies that reflect the recent rule changes in the college game.
