At Hartwick, we believe that athletics are an important part of a liberal arts and sciences education; they complement classroom learning and enhance the life of the College. That's why Hartwick offers a broad range of intercollegiate athletic, physical education, intramural, and club sports programs.

Intercollegiate Athletics
Mission Statement: The Hartwick College Intercollegiate Athletic Department serves as an integral part of the college and is an important participant in its mission. Athletics actively supports the college's vision that "We will be the best at melding liberal arts education with experiential learning," demanding practical experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Athletics provides an environment that encourages physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development.

The mission of the Intercollegiate Athletics Department is to enhance the student experience and to provide quality programs that are competitive, fun, and meaningful in an atmosphere that promotes success within the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship and integrity.

Commitments: Athletics at Hartwick College supports the organizing principle and strategic framework. The outcomes that define our successes include:

Hartwick sponsors 17 intercollegiate teams, 7 for men and 10 for women. Hartwick maintains an NCAA multi-division status with its men's soccer and women's water polo teams competing at the NCAA Division I level. All other sports compete at the NCAA Division III level, except equestrian, which is governed by the IHSA. Many of Hartwick's Division III teams participate in the Empire 8 conference. Hartwick's Division I men's soccer team is a member of the Mid American Conference (MAC). Hartwick's Division I women's water polo team participates in the 24-member Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). Hartwick also sponsors a spirit team which includes cheerleading, a dance team, and Swoop, the official mascot of the Hartwick College athletic programs.

Physical Education
Hartwick's physical education program offers students a variety of activities that promote physical, mental, and social development for a lifetime of health and fitness. Students complete a specified number of physical education skill courses to graduate. Those offerings fall into five main categories:

  • Aquatics: beginning swimming to lifeguarding and water safety instructor certifications
  • Dance: ballet, modern dance, couples dance, and international folkdance
  • Fitness: aerobics, karate, personal fitness, weight training, and wellness
  • Individual/team sports: archery, badminton, bowling, golf, softball, tennis, racquetball, and volleyball
  • Outdoor pursuits: horsemanship and mountain biking

Intramural Program
Hartwick also sponsors intramural and recreational programs for students, faculty, and staff. Activities are planned so that participants achieve their desired degree of skill and personal enjoyment. Club Sports
You don't need to join an athletics team to enjoy sports. Hartwick's club sports program offers opportunities for competition and camaraderie. Generated by student interest, club sports include:
