ONEONTA, N.Y. - After posting a weekend split, the Hartwick field hockey team returns to action Wednesday afternoon as it hosts fourth-ranked Cortland at Wright Stadium. The match gets underway at 4 p.m.
Hartwick, 2-2 on the year, comes into the meeting following a victory over Scranton 3-2 in strokes on Saturday and then a 2-1 loss to Muhlenberg Sunday. Cortland travels to Oneonta sporting a 3-1 mark, including posting back-to-back shutouts against Rochester (4-0) and Houghton (6-0).
The Hawks are paced by Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.). She is off to a quick start in her inaugural campaign with three goals and an assist, including a goal in Hartwick's win over Scranton. Hartwick has five other players who have notched scores this season in Samantha Galm (Kingston, N.Y.), Amanda Johnson (Reading, Vt.), Amanda Barton (Endicott, N.Y.), Lindsay Kurtz (Sherburne, N.Y.), and Morgan Cestari (Lake Grove, N.Y.). All five players have scored one goal each. Galm is second on the team with three points overall, including an assist.
Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) boasts a 2-2 mark in the cage for the Hawks. The sophomore has registered 31 saves thus far in the first four outings, while allowing seven scores. Thorpe was huge in Hartwick's 3-2 victory over Scranton Saturday as she stopped four Royal stroke attempts to cement the victory.
Cortland is led by Kayla Chambers. The junior is off to a torrid start as she has amassed 19 points on the year (8 goals, 3 assists). Chambers netted four of Cortland's five goals in the victory over Rhodes, and then added two more in a decision over Houghton. In last year's meeting, she netted two goals to lead the Red Dragon's to a 4-1 victory over Hartwick. Christine McCabe and Lauren Eichenberger both have recorded two goals for the Red Dragons.
Stacy Billings has played the majority of minutes in the net for Cortland. The junior is 3-1 on the year with a goals against average of 1.04.
