NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -
Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) posted two goals in her collegiate debut to lead Hartwick to a convincing 5-1 victory over New Paltz in field hockey action, Saturday afternoon.
Amanda Johnson (Reading, Vt.) got Hartwick, now 1-0 on the young year, on the board at the 7:17 mark of the first half. Three minutes later,
Samantha Galm (Kingston, N.Y.) upped the Hawk lead to 2-0 with her first score of the year. Right before the end of the half, Galm assisted on Kaye's first goal of the game at 1:17 to give the Hawks a 3-0 advantage heading into intermission.
Hartwick opened the scoring in the second half at the 58:21 mark as
Lindsay Kurtz (Sherburne, N.Y.) to increase its lead to 4-0 before New Paltz ended the Hawks' shutout bid at 45:47 on Megan Flynn's first tally of the yea. Kaye ended the game's scoring with her second marker of the game at 42:43. The freshman had nine shots on goal in her collegiate debut.
The Hawks dominated the New Paltz Hawks in every facet of the game, including holding a 25-9 advantage in shots. Hartwick used all three goalies on its roster in the win.
Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.), who was making her first appearance in net for Hartwick after playing in the field as a freshman in 2006, played 55 minutes and registered three saves before handing the duties over to
Katie Orban (South Salem, N.Y.). The sophomore had three saves before freshman
MacKenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, N.Y.) wrapped up the contest's final five minutes.
Hartwick returns to action, September 5 as it travels to Troy to face Rensselaer The match begins at 4 p.m.
