ONTEONTA, N.Y. - After playing its first two matches away from the friendly confines of its campus, the Hartwick field hockey squad will open its home schedule with a five-game homestand beginning Saturday afternoon as the Scranton Royals come to town. The match begins at 1 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
Hartwick, 1-1 on the year, is coming off a 3-0 loss to Rensselaer, Wednesday evening in Troy. The Hawks are led by freshman Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) and sophomore Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.). In her collegiate debut, Kaye notched her first two collegiate goals in Hartwick's 5-1 victory over New Paltz. She leads the team with four points. Thorpe, who is making the transition from field to goalie this year, has posted a league-leading 17 saves in her first two games, including 14 saves in the loss at Rensselaer.
"After beginning our schedule on the road, we are looking forward to getting back home and playing at Wright Stadium," said Hawk head coach Anna Meyer. "I'm excited to have two very good programs like Scranton and Muhlenberg playing us here. It's always nice to play quality competition from outside our region."
Scranton comes to town sporting a 1-1 record, including a most recent 3-0 victory at Vassar, Thursday evening. In the victory over the Brewers, Corrie Szapka netted two goalies, while Beth McLaughlin tallied the final score. Scranton dropped a 1-0 decision in its opener to Gwynedd-Mercy.
Muhlenberg is also 1-1 on the year. In their last outing, the Mules dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision in double overtime to #15 Elizabethtown in the finals of the Mule Classic. Muhlenberg opened the year with a 3-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan. In the win, Nicki Notarianni netted two goals, while Kelly Shetron figured in on the scoring of all three games (1 goal, 2 assists). The match versus the Mules starts at noon on Sunday
