ONEONTA, N.Y. - St. Lawrence needed more than double overtime to defeat Hartwick in field hockey action, Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. After 90 minutes of play, the 19th-ranked Saints prevailed 2-1 in the end on strokes.
St. Lawrence outscored Hartwick 3-1 in strokes to improve to 9-2 overall. The Saints scored on their first three attempts and never looked back. Jennifer Stetson, Lydia Gibson and Brooke Maloney beat goalie Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) to give St. Lawrence a quick advantage. On their third try, Lindsay Kurtz (Sherburne, N.Y.) kept the Hawks alive by connecting on her attempt. After the Saints were stuffed by Thorpe on their fourth attempt, Hartwick failed on its final chance to remain in the contest.
St. Lawrence opened scoring at 22:08 of the first half as Kristi Onzik banged one home off a corner from Mackenzie Kersen. The Saints carried the 1-0 advantage into intermission.
Hartwick knotted the game at 52:25 as Kurtz beat goalie Lindsey Taylor on a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season.
Thorpe made 10 saves for Hartwick, while Taylor was credited with six in the victory.
Hartwick, now 7-6 overall, returns to action October 16 as it travels to face Union. The game in Schenectady is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
