CHANDLER, AZ - Hartwick senior defender Jenny Murphy (Martha's Vineyard, MA) and sophomore midfielder Amanda Barton (Endicott, NY) both were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association earlier this week with the announcement of the 2008 Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-Region Teams. Murphy and Barton, who were both selected to the North Atlantic Region Second Team, were two of nine Empire 8 players honored.
Murphy led Hartwick in assists this season with six despite being on the defensive end for much of the Hawks' games. She assisted both of the 'Wick's goals including the game-winner in overtime in a 2-1 triumph over Nazareth in the team's final regular-season game, and picked up a helper in three straight games versus Rochester, Morrisville and Ithaca. She also garnered first team all-Empire 8 honors this season.
Barton was a dominating presence in the midfield for the Hawks in 2008. She started 17 games for Hartwick. She scored twice and earned two assists on the season, including a two-assist performance in a 4-1 win over Ithaca to open up Empire 8 Conference play. She tallied her first of the season in a 2-0 shutout of conference rival Elmira, and she netted the game-winning goal against city foe Oneonta State in a 2-1 victory. Earlier this month, she was named to the Empire 8 first team, and in 2007, she received honorable mention from then league following her four-goal, three-assist season.
The Hartwick field hockey team finished the 2008 campaign with a 7-11 overall record. The Hawks were third in the conference standings and qualified for the Empire 8 Tournament.
