ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick College Department of Athletics recognized 19 student-athletes as their team's MVP at Wednesday evening's Athletic Awards Banquet. Hartwick, which sponsors 17 intercollegiate athletic programs, also honored sophomore Jessica Rodriquez as the Team MVP for cheerleading. Listed below are brief summaries on each of the team MVP's achievements during the 2009-10 academic year.
Women's Sports
Cross Country: Gabby Dello (Sr., Mount Upton, NY/SUNY Delhi)
Dello was the Hawks' top finisher at four of the team's seven meets on the season. She also was named to the 2009 Empire 8 Conference Cross Country Sportsperson of the Year team for the second straight season. Dello helped the Hawks to a 26th place finish at the NCAA Division III Regional Championships, 6th place effort at the E8 Championships and 9th at the NYSCTC Championships.
Equestrian: Lauren Lamoureux (So., Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington)
Lamoureux became the third Hartwick rider in the last three years to qualify for the International Horse Show Association National Championships. On May 6th in Lexington, KY, Lamoureux placed 7th out of 20 competitors in Novice Equitation on the Flat to cap a brilliant second season with the program. She earned passage into the national competition placing 2nd out of 12 competitors to finish as the reserve champion at the Zone II Championships in Hackettstown, NJ on April 10th.
Field Hockey: Jenny Murphy (Sr., Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard)
Murphy earns team MVP honors for the second straight year. She was one of the top backs in the region this season. She was a two-time all-region pick and a two-time Empire 8 First Team all-star. She ends her career with the Hawks with three goals and seven assists for 13 points. Murphy was selected to play in the prestigious NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Game on November 22nd and made the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad.
Soccer: Lauren Ploof (Sr., Hammond, NY/Hammond)
Ploof received Empire 8 honorable mention this season after leading the Hawks in scoring with three goals and an assist. She scored two goals late to force overtime against St. John Fisher and registered the game-winner against RIT a week later. In her two seasons with 'Wick she scored 10 goals and assisted six for 26 points.
Tennis: Kim Post (Jr., Nashua, NH/N. Middlesex Reg.)
Post was an Empire 8 Second Team all-star in singles this season. She led the Hawks in singles victories for the second straight season with an 8-4 mark at the number four singles slot. She was 6-2 in conference matches and holds a 26-14 record in her three-year career. Post also combined with teammate Jen Lin for conference honorable mention as a doubles team. Post and Lin won nine matches together in doubles and went 5-3 in conference matches. The five victories ranked second at number two doubles in the E8 this season.
Volleyball: Darcy Dolge (Sr., La Grande, OR/La Grande)
Dolge, a four-year player for the program, finished her final season with a team-best 419 assists, and added 189 kills, and 149 digs. She also was named to the Hartwick/Holiday Inn All-Tournament Team. Dolge's season totals moved her up to 4th in 'Wick history in assists (1,209) and 6th in career kills (750).
Basketball: Lauren Ploof (Sr., Hammond, NY/Hammond)
Ploof, a second team all-conference performer last season, received honorable mention from the E8 conference coaches. She finished the season averaging 9.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 24 starts for the Hawks. She broke the 1,000-point mark for her career in December and closed her career with 1,139 points. She ranks 11th in assists and free-throw percentage and 15th in scoring in the conference.
Swimming & Diving: Stephanie Ha (So., Everett, WA/Henry M. Jackson)
Ha was the team's second highest point producer with 523.5 points. She won 21 individual races this season. She shattered the College record in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.47 at the conference championships this season and secured B-cut times in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Ha teamed with sophomores Robyn Smith, Kristen Grunert, and freshman Whitney Fletcher for a school record time of 1:50.31 in the 200 medley relay.
Lacrosse: Brittany LaVaute (So., Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles)
LaVaute was one of two players to reach the 25-goal mark this season for the Hawks. For her efforts, she garnered E8 Honorable Mention. She led Hartwick in goals scored (29), free-position goals (11), assists (9), and points (38). She was the only player on the team to score in every game this year, including a career-best six goals versus Elmira.
Water Polo: Kirsten Hudson (Sr., Wellington, New Zealand/Sacred Heart)
Hudson, who received Hartwick Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight season, garnered CWPA Northern Division Most Valuable Player of the Year honors this season to close out her stellar four-year stint with the Hawks. She is a Three-time All-American, a four-time CWPA Eastern First Team all-star, a three-time Northern MVP, and holds College records in virtually every statistical category. Hudson scored 368 goals and added 248 assists for an astounding 616 career points. She also recorded a program-best 249 steals.
Men's Sports
Cross Country: John Stuligross (Fr., Kenosha, WI/Kenosha Bradford)
Newcomer John Stuligross paced the Hawks throughout the season as the team's top finisher in six of seven races. He helped the Hawks finish 7th at the Empire 8 Conference Championship meet, 10th at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championships, and 35th at the NCAA Division III Regional Championships. He ended the campaign with a career-best 5-mile time of 28:29 at the NCAA Regionals.
Football: Noah Koreman (Sr., Albany, NY/Albany), Ben Tomaino (Sr., Oneonta, NY/Oneonta
Koreman was an Empire 8 First Team selection, an ECAC Northwest all-star, and a D3football.com second teamer. He racked up 1,107 yards on 45 receptions, ranked 15th in D-III football, led the Empire 8 Conference in receiving yards per game, and was tied for 16th in the country in scoring. He ranks in the Top 10 in Hartwick history in touchdown receptions (6th), reception yards (8th), total points scored (8th), total touchdowns (8th), and receptions (10th).
Tomaino earned All-American Honorable Mention honors to close out his career with the Hawks. The Empire 8 Conference First Team selection finished the season with 82 tackles, 16 tackles for a loss of 88 yards, and 11 sacks. His TFL and sack totals were both tops in the Empire 8 this season. In addition, Tomaino ranked tied for 7th in the nation in sacks per game (1.10) and tied for 31st in tackles for loss per game (1.60). In his last career game, Tomaino vaulted into 2nd all-time at Hartwick in sacks with 19.5, and 3rd in tackles for loss with 39.5. Over four years with the Hawks he accumulated 236 tackles, good enough for 6th in 'Wick history.
Tennis: Matt Whitty (Sr., St. Catherines, ON/Ridley College)
Whitty is a two-time team MVP after winning the distinction last year. In his final tour with the Hawks, Whitty finished 6-8 at fifth singles and teamed with Marcelo Navarro for a 6-8 mark at the second doubles flight. As a starter over the last two seasons, Whitty won 11 singles matches and 10 in doubles play.
Basketball: Mark Blazek (So., Erie, PA/Erie Prep)
An ECAC and Empire 8 First Team all-star, Blazek finished second in the conference in scoring with 486 points and an average of 20.3 points per game. His season scoring average ranked in the top 40 nationally. He was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team and ranks 8th in Hartwick history in three-pointers made.
Swimming & Diving: Michael Phillips (So., Austin, TX/James Bowie)
Phillips had an impressive second season with the Hawks becoming the first Hartwick athlete to swim at the NCAA Championships since 2006, competing in the 200 IM (placed 31st), 200 free (24th), and 200 breast (26th). He also finished the season with a team-best 702.8 points and he won 38 of the 45 individual races he swam in. At the conference meet, Phillips broke the College record in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.60) to earn E8 and UNYSCSA titles as well as First Team All-E8 honors. He also earned E8 second team accolades in the 200 IM.
Lacrosse: Dave Aitchison (Jr., N. Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale)
A junior attackman, Aitchison was selected to the Empire 8 Conference First Team after leading the conference in assists and finishing 2nd in points and 9th in goals. He ended the season with 63 points from 29 goals and 34 assists. His 63 points is the 10th-highest single-season point total in the history of the men's lacrosse program. Currently, Aitchison ranks ninth in the country in assists per game.
Soccer: Jeremy Vuolo (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown W.)
Vuolo earned MAC First Team honors for the first time in his career with the Blue and White this past season. He recorded a goals against average of just 0.84 (3rd in the MAC), a save percentage of .822 (3rd), 74 saves (2nd), and seven shutouts (Tied-2nd). He recorded clean sheets in seven of 'Wick's 11 games to start the 2009 season and he now has 18 for his career. With a 10-4-4 record in goal this year, Vuolo has registered a 21-14-8 mark with 204 saves in his three-year career in the 'Wick goal.
