Hartwick Field Hockey Players Earn All-Region Honors; Murphy Selected for NFHCA All-Star Game

  November 17, 2009

CHANDLER, AZ - For the second straight season, junior midfielder Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) and senior back Jenny Murphy (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard) have been named to the 2009 Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-North Atlantic Region Teams. Barton was a first team all-region pick after garnering second team honors last season. Murphy was selected to the second team for the second straight year. Murphy also was selected as an alternate for the 2009 NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Game this Sunday.

Barton was a huge factor in the Hawks' success this season in the middle of the field. She set up four goals this season and was the team's fourth-leading shot taker. Barton earned her first point on an assist of Hartwick's only goal against St. Lawrence and picked up another helper on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 upset of then-20th ranked Hamilton. She also recorded assists in wins over Morrisville and Washington & Jefferson in the regular season. Barton has six goals and nine assists through her first three years with 'Wick.

Murphy was one of the top backs in the region this season. Despite spending much of her time on defense, the senior still scored two big goals for the Hawks this season. She netted her first goal of the season on October 24th to defeat Utica 1-0. Murphy then scored with under two minutes to play in the ECAC quarterfinals against Wilkes to force overtime, keeping 'Wick's playoff run alive. She ends her career with the Hawks with three goals and seven assists for 13 points.

Murphy will travel to the NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Game which will take place on the campus of Mount Holyoke in South Hadley, MA on Sunday, November 22nd at 9:30 a.m. The game will be played before Sunday's NCAA Division III National Championship Game.

Hartwick field hockey finished the season with a 13-8 overall record. The Hawks went 5-1 in the Empire 8 and made the conference playoffs for the third straight season. 'Wick earned entry into the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament for the fifth time where they advanced to the championship match following wins over #1 seed Wilkes and #4 seed Alvernia.
