WACO, TX - Hartwick senior wide receiver Jack Phelan (Slingerlands, NY) was rewarded this week for his record-setting season as the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) released its Division III All-America team for 2008.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of college football's divisions. The teams are currently the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best - the coaches themselves.
Phelan was one of two wide receivers selected nationwide on the 25-member D-3 team (11 offense, 11 defense, 3 special teams) along with Hardin-Simmons' Mychal Carillo. He was also one of two Empire 8 players picked with Ithaca tight end Brian Weverburgh.
The 5-11 Hartwick senior from Slingerlands tied a 10-year old NCAA Division III record this season making 26 touchdown receptions in 10 games. The feat tied Scott Pingel's mark for Westminster College (MO) set in 1998. Phelan was an Empire 8 first team selection and d3football.com all-East Region pick and was a three-time conference and ECAC Northwest Player of the Week.
This season, Phelan went over the 100-yard mark six times including in four of the Hawks' last five games. He earned three-touchdown efforts versus Norwich and Utica, a pair of four-TD performances in back-to-back games versus Becker and Mount Ida, and set a career and NCAA D-III season-high with six scores to kick off the season against Western New England. P
helan would end up with the two highest single-game totals in reception yards in Div. III this season. He accumulated 311 against Mount Ida and 289 versus Western New England.
He led the nation in 2008 for the second consecutive season in both receiving yards per game (153.30 ypg) and total receiving yards (1,533). He also finished 3rd in the country in scoring (15.60 ppg), and 19th in receptions per game (7.00 rpg).
Despite playing just three seasons for the Hawks, Phelan will leave 'Wick as its all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 50. He sits second in Hartwick history in both total points scored (300) and total touchdowns (50), and is 3rd in career receiving yards (3,222) and 6th in career receptions (146).
