NEW YORK, NY - 'Wick seniors Jason Boltus (Baldwinsville, NY) and Jack Phelan (Slingerlands, NY) continue to rack up postseason honors following their historic final seasons with Hawk football. Both players were named to the Associated Press Little All-America second team earlier this week.
The AP Little All-America teams are comprised of the top players from across the nation from the Division II, III, and NAIA ranks. Seventy-five players total in all three divisions were recognized.
Boltus and Phelan were two of only 15 Division III players on the Little America first and second teams. The pair is two of three Empire 8 student-athletes represented and two of four players from New York State on the AP teams. Hartwick and Wisconsin-Whitewater were the only two Division III programs with two players on the first two teams, and only Division II's North Alabama (3) had more selections than 'Wick on the first and second teams.
Boltus was the Empire 8 and d3football.com East Region Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year and a regional finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy for the second consecutive season in 2008. He led NCAA Div. III in three different offensive categories, including passing yards per game and total offense for the second straight year. He shattered the all-time NCAA Div. III mark for total yards with 14,231 and set Hartwick benchmarks for career TD throws and passing yards. Boltus' 134 touchdown passes ranks sixth all-time in all four NCAA divisions (FBS, FCS, II, III). He also sits in 9th place in total yards and his 13,276 career passing yards ranks 10th.
Earlier this week, Phelan was named an American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) All-American after leading Division III in reception yards and reception yards per game for the second season in a row, and tying an NCAA record for TD catches in a season. His 311 receiving yards versus Mount Ida this season is the 12th-highest single-game total in Division III history. Phelan's career average of 134.6 yards per game puts him 4th in D-3 history, and his 50 career touchdown catches ranks 8th. With 1,628 reception yards in 2007 and 1,533 in 2008, he has accumulated two of the top 15 single-season totals in NCAA Div. III history.
