'Wick Men's Basketball Selected to Compete in ECAC Upstate Tournament This Weekend

  March 2, 2009

CAPE COD, MA - The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its tournament field for the Upstate Men's Basketball Tournament earlier today. Hartwick College has been chosen as the fourth seed in the four-team tournament to be held this Friday and Saturday at St. John Fisher College in Rochester. The Hawks will oppose top-seeded Fredonia State at 8 p.m. on Fri., Mar. 6th. Third-seeded Oswego State will face the host Cardinals in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. The tournament championship is slated for Sat., Mar. 7th at 2 p.m.

The Hawks are making their eighth appearance in the ECAC Tournament and first since 1995. Hartwick competed in the tournament from 1986-87, 1990-93, and in 1995, and has never won an ECAC title. The Hawks lost in the championship game in each of the 1990-92 seasons and lost in the finals to the Fredonia State Blue Devils in 1995.

Hartwick finished the season 13-12 in 2008-09, rattling off four straight wins over Masachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Empire 8 champion and NCAA Tournament participant RIT, Alfred University, and Stevens. This year's team has won the most games in a season since the 1999-2000 campaign and can register the most victories since 1995-96 (13 years) with a pair of wins this weekend. Hartwick standout Jan Cocozziello (Scotch Plains, NJ), the third player in College history to accumulate over 1,800 points, sits in second place all-time with 1,837 and is just 42 points from passing career leader Tim McGraw '88.
