Hartwick Athletes' Presence Felt at Ithaca YMCA Triathlon

  May 4, 2009

ITHACA, NY - Hartwick College tri-athletes were dominant at Sunday's 21st Annual YMCA Triathlon as they posted many age-group top performances and fastest splits time. The race consisted of a 400-yard swim, an aggressive 15.8-mile bike, and 4.7-mile run.

The men were led out of the water by Hartwick swimming and diving team member Michael Phillips (Austin, TX), whose blazing swim of 4:09, by far the fastest of the day, paved the way for a 2nd place finish in the 19 and under age-group. Sophomore Tim Sattler (Warwick, NY) won the 19 and under group and was 5th overall. Senior Sam Roods (Greenwich, NY) racing in his 1st ever triathlon, was 2nd in the 20-24 age group.

On the women's side, the Hawks were led by the strong bike-run (5th fastest on the day) combination from Gabby Dello (Mount Upton, NY) who finished 7th overall and 2nd in the 20-24 age group. Freshman Erika Gates (Vestal, NY) won the 19 and under age group, while Sophomore Laura Gray (New Windsor, NY) also had a solid performance finishing 7th in the 20-24 age group. Kitty Mears (South Woodstock, VT) was 10th in the 20-24 age group.

Coach Dereck Treadwell finished first overall with both the fastest run and bike splits of the day. "It is exciting to see the group be such a presence at a race," said Treadwell. "However, when the results are excellent and everyone has a good experience that is the best."
