  April 27, 2009
Brandon Wilk

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's showdown with local rival Oneonta State wrapped up on Monday with a 13-9 Hawks' victory at All College Field after close to a week on the shelf. Lightning shortened the original game date last Tuesday with the Hawks leading 5-4 with 14:33 to play in the third quarter. Today, the Hawks trailed 7-6 with six minutes left in the third period before seven straight 'Wick goals over the next 12 minutes would put the game away.

Senior Steve Caramello (Duxbury, MA) and sophomore Ryan Kloss (Hillsborough, NJ) led Hartwick in the match with three goals each. Kloss also added a team-high three assists. Senior Alex Giovinazzo (Waltham, MA), junior Steve Kuron (Wantagh, NY), and junior Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, NJ) each scored two goals apiece. Senior goalie John Meade (Ocean Beach, NY) ended the game with nine saves. He tied for a game-high six ground balls and earned an assist.

The Red Dragons scored three of the first four goals in the opening nine minutes of the third quarter to grab a 7-6 edge. A Kuron tally from Meade 5:07 into the third was the Hawks' lone tally in the span. 'Wick played a dominant final 5:33 of the period outscoring Oneonta by a 5-0 margin. Freshman Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY) scored an unassisted goal to get the rally started, and Wilk would give the Hawks the lead for good 1:50 later. Freshman Chris Livelli (Hillsborough, NJ) connected with Kloss for his second of the day and Caramello completed his hat-trick with 1:39 left in the period from a Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY) pass. Giovinazzo finished off the third with a shot from Livelli with just two seconds remaining.

Kloss extended the Hawks' lead 4:45 into the fourth and Giovinazzo added his team-leading 19th of the year to make it 13-7 with just over eight minutes to play. Oneonta scored twice in the final six minutes but the Hawks' big third quarter was too much to overcome.

In the first half, played on Apr. 21, Caramello scored twice and added an assist to help HC to a 5-4 edge. After the Red Dragons opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game, the Duxbury, MA native tied the score just over four minutes later from a pass from Kloss. Fifty-seven seconds later Oneonta State regained the lead, but Caramello answered once again with two minutes left in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Oneonta and Hartwick traded goals in the first eight minutes. The Red Dragons went up 3-2 after 46 seconds before Kuron tied the score for 'Wick with an unassisted goal 33 seconds later. Twenty-four seconds after Kuron evened the score, Oneonta was back on top as Steve Loesch netted his second of the day. Seven minutes to go before halftime, Kloss tallied making it 4-4. Caramello would then set up Wilk for the Hawks' go-ahead goal with 35 seconds left before halftime. It would end up being the last tally of the day as the game was halted 27 ticks into the third quarter.

Hartwick would end the match with a 49-29 in shots. Oneonta held a slight 33-32 edge in ground balls. Aitchison, Wilk, Kuron, sophomore Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY), and senior Matt Shellard (Latham, NY) each secured three ground balls for the Hawks.

Hartwick, which ends the season on a two-game winning streak, finishes up 2009 with an overall mark of 6-8.
