Miller Selected to Play in North-South Senior Game; Tabbed Academic All-American

  May 27, 2010
Senior Kevin Miller

PERRY, NY - The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced its participants for the 2010 USILA/Lax World North/South Game and its 2010 Academic All-Americans yesterday. Hartwick College senior defender Kevin Miller (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), after a stellar final campaign for the Hawks, earned a spot on both lists.

Miller takes part in this season's North/South Game which will take place at Goucher College in Towson, MD on Friday May 28th at Beldon Field at 3 p.m. Miller is one of just eight Empire 8 seniors on the 30-man North roster. Last season, 'Wick goalie John Meade competed for the North side and in 2007 Chris Vogler and Ryan Welch were selected while current Hawks' head coach Bill Bjorness served as head coach of the squad.

The first North versus South game was held in 1940 at Baltimore's Municipal Stadium. The game combined Division I, II, and III players. In 1991, the first Division III North-South Game was held and it has been part of the national final four weekend ever since.

An Empire 8 First Team all-star this season, Miller picked up a conference-best 34 ground balls in Empire 8 play. He finished the year with a team-high 57 ground balls and 37 caused turnovers (2nd on team). Miller grabbed 20 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers in Hartwick's final four games, helping to lead the Hawks to three wins. Over the course of his four-year career with 'Wick, Miller has accumulated 148 ground balls and 72 caused turnovers.

Miller is one of just 70 Division I, II, and III athletes to be selected USILA Academic All-American this year. Only 40 Division III athletes from 151 USILA member institutions received distinction on this season's squad. It marks the second straight season a Hartwick player has received the honor after Meade was honored in 2009.

In 1989, the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically, and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III. The Scholar All-Americas are recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-America Banquet.
