ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Hartwick men's soccer team returns to action Saturday evening as it hosts Binghamton at Elmore Field. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
This match-up will be the 12th meeting all-time between the two schools, with Hartwick holding a commanding 7-2-2 edge in the series. The Bearcats got their second all-time victory over the Hawks with a 1-0 decision last year at the Bearcat Sports Complex.
Hartwick, 3-2-1 on the year, enters the game following a 0-1-1 showing at the Penn Soccer Classic. The Hawks fell to Penn 2-1 in the opener and then tied Layette 0-0 in double overtime. In the tie against the Leopards, Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, Pa.) collected six saves en route for his third shutout of the season.
At this stage, the Hawks possess the Mid American Conference's second rated offense, averaging 1.5 goals per game. Hartwick is paced by a pair of players ranked among the top scorers in the league - Chris Jackson (Manchester, England) and John Paul Boyle (Renfrew, Scotland). Both Jackson and Boyle have posted three goals on the year and rank at the top of the league standings. Hartwick's other three goals have come from Barry Pearson (Linlithgow, Scotland), Liam Parrington (Woking, England), and Evan Doan (Garland, Texas). Freshman Michael Cunningham (Dunedin, New Zealand) is at the top of the MAC charts for assists. In Hartwick's 3-0 victory over Seton Hall, he registered two of his three helpers this season off consecutive corner kicks. Vuolo also ranks among the league best in goals against average (0.47) and shutouts.
Binghamton comes to Oneonta sporting a 5-2 overall mark. The Bearcats opened the season with five consecutive victories, all 1-0 decisions. Binghamton dropped a pair of games in Richmond, Va., last weekend - a 1-0 loss to Richmond and a 3-1 defeat to Duquesne.
The Hawks will sponsor a Hartwick College Youth Soccer Night against the Bearcats. The admission is free of charge and there will be drawings throughout the game for prizes.
