Boyle's Goal Gives Hartwick Victory Over Buffalo

  November 3, 2007
BUFFALO, N.Y. - John Paul Boyle (Renfrew, Scotland) provided the game-winning goal in the second half to lead visiting Hartwick to a 2-1 victory over the University of Buffalo in Mid American Conference soccer action, Saturday afternoon at UB Stadium.

Boyle beat Buffalo goalie Daniel Bell with a shot from 20 yards off which hit the post and trickled in at 72:25 to give the Hawks the winning margin. It was the junior's team-leading seventh tally of the campaign.

Buffalo, which fell to 9-5-2 overall (3-2 in the MAC), got on the board rather early at 9:43 as Justin Fredsell notched his first goal of the year by beating Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, Pa.) on a shot to the far post from 15 yards out.

Hartwick tied the contest at 39:29 as Austin McCann (Jenks, Okla.) tallied his second marker of the year on a blast from inside the six-yard box. It was the redshirt sophomore's second-consecutive game with a goal.

Vuolo posted six saves in the victory for Hartwick, while Bell saved three shots in the loss for UB.

Hartwick, now 5-4-6 overall (2-1-2 in the MAC), will return to action Wednesday evening as it travels to face long-time rival Cornell. The game starts at 7 p.m. in Ithaca. The meeting will be the 45th time the two programs have squared off with Hartwick holding a 30-11-3 advantage in the overall series.

Following the contest with "Big Red", the Hawks will return home and host a MAC play-in game, October 13th at Elmore Field. Hartwick, which will carry the third seed into the tournament, will host sixth-seeded Western Michigan. Game time hasn't been set. It will be the second time the two have faced off at Elmore this season. On October 20, both teams battled to a 3-3 double overtime draw. The other play-in game features fourth seed Bowling Green hosting the defending league champs, Northern Illinois. The winners of the two play-in games will converge on Akron, Ohio for the semifinals to be played on Friday. Akron is the top seed, while Buffalo will be the second seed.
