FAIRFIELD, CONN. - Despite out shooting its counterparts, the Hartwick men's soccer team posted its second tie on the season as the Hawks and Fairfield battled to a scoreless tie in double overtime, Wednesday evening at Lessing Field.
Hartwick, now 3-3-2 overall, finished with a 13-6 shot advantage. Stag goalie Jon Paul Francini was forced to make six saves, while Hartwick netminder Jeremy Vuolo (Downington, Pa.) registered one save in 110 minutes of action. It was the redshirt freshman's fourth shutout of the season. Vuolo also tallied shutouts versus James Madison, Seton Hall, and Lafayette earlier this season.
The game pitted two Hartwick alums as Hawk head coach Ian McIntyre '96 squared off with Stag head coach Carl Rees '88. Fairfield entered the contest riding a three-game win streak and boasted a 5-1 overall mark. The Stags advanced to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Division I Championships after beating Connecticut in the opening round.
Hartwick will return to action October 6 as they travel to face Akron. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field. The match-up with the Zips will mark Hartwick's first-ever Mid American Conference league game.
