ONEONTA, N.Y. - Chris Jackson (Manchester, England) provided the game's lone goal to lift Hartwick to a 1-0 victory over James Madison in the nightcap of the first day at the 32nd Annual Mayor's Cup, Saturday evening at Elmore Field. Syracuse overcame a 1-0 deficit to down Seton Hall 2-1 in the opener.
Jackson beat JMU goalie Ken Manahan with a penalty kick at the 37:57 mark of the first half to give the Hawks all it would need. The senior's goal, his second of the year, came after a series of two shots that hit the post by John Paul Boyle (Renfrew, Scotland).
The Hawks, now 2-1 on the year, had multiple opportunities to put the game away earlier in the second half, but failed to capitalize on a few golden opportunities. Hartwick played in a man up situation from Jackson's tally onward due to a red card handed out to a Duke player.
Redshirt Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, Pa.) made his first collegiate start and was credited with the win. JMU mustered six shots, but failed to put one on net. James Madison fell to 1-2 overall.
In the opener, Hansen Woodruff scored the game-winning goal off a rebound at the 66:26 mark to give the Orangemen the victory over the Pirates.
Seton Hall, which fell to 2-1, got on the board rather early in the contest as Eliseo Guisfredi beat Syracuse goalie Robert Cavicchia on a direct kick 39 seconds into the match-up. The Orangemen tied the game at 1-1 at 41:30 as Justin Arena fed Tom Perevegyencev with a crossing pass and the sophomore buried the shot past Paul McHenry.
The Pirates had one last golden opportunity to tie the score in the 86th minute as Giusfredi was awarded a penalty kick. Cavicchia stuffed the attempt to preserve the victory for the Orange.
Syracuse and James Madison will meet Sunday at 1 p.m., while Hartwick and Seton Hall will clash at 3:30 p.m. to close out the Mayor's Cup. That match-up will be the first time the two schools have met since the Pirates knocked the Hawks out of the 2005 NCAA Tournament in a 2-1 victory.
