Hartwick Blanks Northern Illinois

  October 28, 2007

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Day at Hartwick College ended in celebration as the Hawks closed their home schedule with an impressive 3-0 victory over Northern Illinois in Mid-American Conference soccer action, Sunday at Elmore Field. The result serves as the program's first-ever win in the MAC.

Hartwick's Ashton Henry (St. Andrew's, Grenada), Austin McCann (Broken Arrow, Okla.), and Chris Sardon (Sacramento, Calif.) each scored second half goals to help give Hartwick its first win since its victory over Seton Hall on September 9 in the final of the Mayor's Cup. During this stretch, the Hawks went 0-3-6 over the previous nine games. Hartwick had posted four consecutive ties heading into today's contest.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, Henry opened scoring for Hartwick at the 56:10 mark with a header off a corner kick from Jonathan Garcia-Torres (Brentwood, N.Y.). It was the senior's first-ever goal for Hartwick since transferring from Iowa Central Community College prior to the 2006 campaign.

At 67:24, Hartwick got some breathing room as McCann dribbled by two NIU defenders and beat goalie Joe Zimka inside the box for his first goal of the season. The game remained 2-0 until Sardon, another senior, connected on his first marker of the year off a cross by McCann at 74:43.

Hartwick's Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, Pa.) tallied four saves in the victory to get his fifth shutout of the season. Zimka didn't record a save in net for the Huskies.

The Hawks, now 4-4-6 overall and 1-1-2 in league action, return to action Saturday afternoon as it travels to face Buffalo in its last regular-season MAC game of the year. The contest starts at 1 p.m.
