ONEONTA, N.Y. - Hartwick rebounded from a goal deficit late in regulation en route to posting a 1-1 draw with instate rival Syracuse in men's soccer action, Wednesday evening at Elmore Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the 87th minute of action, Carson Pryde (Calgary, Alberta) picked a great time to post his first collegiate goal. Off a corner kick from Michael Cunningham (Dunedin, New Zealand), the freshman beat Syracuse goalie Robert Cavicchia to knot the game up with 3:13 remaining in regulation. It was Cunningham's fourth assist on the year.
The Hawks made things interesting in the closing moments with two more corner kicks, including one in the final seconds. The horn sounded before a shot could get off. Hartwick's best opportunity to end the game in the first overtime period as Chris Sardon (Sacramento, Calif.) sent a header at the 8:15 mark wide of the cage off a corner from Cunningham .
After a scoreless first half, Syracuse, now 5-4-4 overall, got on the board at 71:27 as Hansen Woodruff beat Hartwick goalie Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, Pa.) on a penalty kick for his eighth score of the season.
The Hawks held a 14-7 advantage in shots. Cavicchia made two saves for Syracuse, while Vuolo tallied three in net for Hartwick.
The draw marks the fifth time in the 32-game series that the end result was a tie. Hartwick leads the overall series 16-11-5.
The Hawks, 3-4-4 overall, return to action Saturday evening as they host their first-ever Mid-American Conference contest at Elmore Field as Western Michigan comes to Oneonta. The game, which is part of Homecoming festivities, begins at 7 p.m.
At halftime of the game with the Broncos, Hartwick will celebrate the late Glenn "Mooch" Myernick as it dedicates a memorial adjacent to Elmore Field in his honor.
