Wright, Summers Named Academic All-MAC

CLEVELAND, OH - A pair of Hartwick men's soccer players were honored earlier this week as the Mid-American Conference announced its 2009 Academic All-MAC selections. 'Wick senior midfielder Sam Wright (Newquay, England/Bryant & Stratton) and sophomore forward Dan Summers (Banstead, England/Sutton Grammar) were two of 12 student-athletes picked on the team.

Sam WrightWright, a Business Administration major, ended the fall semester with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.44. He started all 18 games for Hartwick this season registering three goals and an assist. All three of Wright's tallies on the year came in 'Wick victories. He scored in a 3-0 win over Loyola in the Mayor's Cup, tallied in a 3-1 win over conference rival Buffalo, and registered a goal and an assist versus Syracuse in a 2-1 win. He earned all-tournament honors at the Mayor's Cup for his efforts.

Dan SummersSummers, who possesses a 3.45 cume GPA, was the Hawks' top point producer this season with six goals and three assists for 15 points. The third team all-region selection and a second team All-MAC pick was ranked 7th in the MAC in goals per game (0.38) and 8th in points per game (0.94). Summers was also tied for 4th in the conference in game-winning goals (0.19) after netting the win-clinching tallies against Hartford, #15 Dartmouth, and Syracuse. The sophomore striker has registered nine goals and assisted five other Hawk tallies in his first two seasons with the program.

To be nominated for Academic All-MAC honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's matches for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year were not eligible for the award.

The Hawks earned the 10th-highest grade point average in Division I soccer this season (3.28) to earn an NSCAA Team Academic Award. Seventeen of 30 players on the 'Wick roster finished the fall semester with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.
