Hartwick Men's Soccer Land Six on MAC All-Conference Teams

  November 13, 2009

CLEVELAND, OH - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2009 teams on Friday with six Hartwick men's soccer players earning distinction. Junior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) was named to the MAC First Team. Junior defender Owen Botting (Billingshurst, England/Heidelberg College), junior midfielder Michael Cunningham (Dunedin, New Zealand/John McGlashan), sophomore midfielder Nick Roydhouse (Palmerston, New Zealand/Palmerston N.), sophomore forward Dan Summers (Banstead, England/Sutton Grammer), and freshman back Konrad Andersson (Helsingborg, Sweden/Filbornaskolan) each were second team selections.

The Hawks' six selections on the first and second teams was second-most in the league. Top-ranked and undefeated Akron had eight players on the first team and two on the second for 10 total. The Hawks grabbed six selections with Western Michigan and Northern Illinois earning two apiece. Buffalo and Bowling Green each landed one player on the MAC teams.

Vuolo earns MAC honors for the first time in his career with the Blue and White. He has been a dominant goalkeeper in the league this season recording a goals against average of just 0.71 (3rd in the MAC), a save percentage of .833 (tied-2nd), 60 saves (2nd), and seven shutouts (Tied-3rd). He recorded clean sheets in seven of 'Wick's 11 games to start the 2009 season and he now has 18 for his career. With a 9-3-4 record in goal this year, Vuolo has registered a 20-13-8 mark with 190 saves in his three-year career in the 'Wick goal.

Backs Botting and Andersson helped a Hartwick defense unit shutout seven opponents and allow just 12 goals in 16 games. The 12 goals allowed is the lowest total for any Hartwick team since 1992 when the Hawks also gave up 12 in 17 matches.

Botting has been a big factor in the Hartwick offense with his effective restarts for the past two seasons. In 2009, Botting has notched a team-best seven assists and ranks second in the MAC in assists per game. It marks the second straight season he has led the Hawks in the assist department. He is currently just six helpers away from cracking the Hartwick all-time top 10.

Andersson has started 15 matches on the backline for 'Wick. He garnered his first point in a Hartwick uniform on November 3rd in the Hawks' 2-1 victory over Binghamton.

Cunningham and Roydhouse have been mainstays in the midfield for the Hawks this season. The New Zealand duo has combined for five goals, eight assists, and three game-winning goals.

Cunningham has picked up three goals and three assists this season. He netted the game's lone goal in the Hawks' season-opening 1-0 victory at Fordham and earned back-to-back assists in wins over Dartmouth and Northern Illinois. He converted the game-tying penalty kick against Bowling Green on Oct. 25, assisted Hartwick's goal in a 1-1 draw with Western Michigan, and tallied last Saturday in 'Wick's 3-2 setback at Akron. Over his three years with the program, Cunningham has four goals and 10 helpers.

With nine points this season, Roydhouse is tied with Cunningham for third on the team. Both of Roydhouse's goals against Loyola and Northern Illinois were game-winners, and he also notched assists in three straight games versus Loyola, Buffalo, and Dartmouth. Roydhouse was named to the Mayor's Cup XXXIV All-Tournament Team as he finished second in scoring among the four competing teams.

After recording three goals and two assists last year, Summers is the Hawks' leading point producer this season with four goals and three assists (12 points) and he has notched a team-best three game-winning tallies. He scored the Hartwick goal in a 1-0 win over Hartford and both goals in a 2-0 victory over #15 Dartmouth. He was selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week this year for his efforts. Summers also tallied the clincher in a 2-1 triumph at Syracuse.
