ONEONTA, NY - The Men's Soccer program announced its 2009 Fall Schedule today which includes games against five teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Hartwick will compete against the champions of the Ivy League, Patriot League, Northeast Conference and MAAC with additional games against teams from the Big East, Atlantic 10, America East and the Mid-American Conference.
Head coach Ian McIntyre has created a very demanding and exciting schedule that will prepare the team to compete for the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championship. Coach McIntyre remarked, "We are looking forward to the challenges ahead and our schedule will allow us to evolve into a team capable of making a run at a conference title. With so many new faces on the team this year I believe that it is imperative to place our young players under some early season pressure. We are taking on three teams who were seeded for the 2008 NCAA Tournament, which includes a team who enjoyed an entire unbeaten 2008 regular season (Loyola), and a team who was ranked as high as#2 in the country (Akron). Our 'Wick supporters will have the opportunity to watch some tremendous soccer here on Elmore Field and our players and coaching staff are anxious to get started."
McIntyre's Hawks, after road exhibition matches in August versus 2008 NCAA Tournament participants Fairleigh Dickinson and Connecticut, as well as a home warm-up versus Albany, officially open up regular season play away from Elmore Field with a pair of games at Fordham and Marist. Hartwick outlasted the Rams at home in overtime last season on Sept. 27th. 'Wick is unbeaten against the Red Foxes (7-0-0) in seven previous meetings with the last victory coming in the 2000 season (3-0 win).
The Big Red of Cornell will then come to town for Hartwick's home opener on Monday, Sept. 7th at 7 p.m. The Hawks have accumulated 30 wins in 45 matches against Cornell all-time. Last season's scheduled match between the two sides was snowed out on Oct. 28th.
Mayor's Cup weekend takes place between Sept. 11th-13th with the Hawks hosting Bucknell, Loyola, and Syracuse at Elmore Field. This season's tournament marks the 34th year of the event. The Hawks entertain Bucknell in the tournament's second game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. Hartwick drew with the Bison 2-2 last season at the Bucknell Days Inn Classic. 'Wick then closes out play against Loyola on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Greyhounds downed the Blue and White 2-0 early in the season en route to an 18-0-1 regular season campaign.
Following a road contest at Hartford (Sept. 19), 'Wick begins Mid-American Conference play on the road at Buffalo on Sept. 22nd. The Hawks then return home to host Dartmouth four days later on Sept. 26th. The Big Green finished the season 11-6-2, won the Ivy League, and made it to the NCAA Third Round a year ago.
The Hawks host Northern Illinois to open October during Hartwick's Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 3rd, travel to defending Patriot League champ Colgate on Oct. 6th, and host Florida Atlantic during Parents' Weekend on Oct. 10th. 'Wick was edged in overtime 2-1 at NIU, defeated the local rival Raiders 1-0, and were held to a goalless 0-0 draw in Boca Raton against the Owls last season.
The Hawks battle the Orange of Syracuse on the road on Oct. 13th. 'Wick leads the all-time series going 16-11-5 against 'Cuse dating back to 1977. After a MAC clash at Bowling Green on Oct. 24th, the Hawks return home and look to stay unbeaten against conference foe Western Michigan (2-0-2) in a match on Halloween.
'Wick will get its shot at breaking its winless streak against Binghamton on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd at Elmore Field. The Hawks, who have not beaten the Bearcats since 2001, dropped three straight from 2005-2007 before gaining a 0-0 tie on Sept. 23rd of last year.
The regular season concludes where it ended last season for the Hartwick - in Akron, OH. The Hawks, who were less than four minutes away from an upset over the nationally 4th ranked Akron Zips on their home field in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, surrendered a late tying goal and fell in the subsequent shootout after regulation time. 'Wick also played Akron tough at Elmore Field earlier in the season on Nov. 1. The Zips entered the match ranked second in the country and escaped Oneonta with a 2-1 win.
The Hawks will eye another spot in the MAC Tournament which takes place from Friday, Nov. 13th to Sun., Nov. 15th at the top seed following the regular season. 'Wick returns seven starters from last season's 7-5-7 squad and welcomes 15 talented newcomers to the lineup this fall.
