Phillips Takes 2nd in 200 IM to Pace Men's Swimming at UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Meet

SYRACUSE, NY - Hartwick's men's swimming and diving teams began competition at the 2010 UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships Friday at Nottingham High School in Syracuse. The Hawks are currently 7th in the UNYSCSA and 5th in the Empire 8 standings.

Sophomore Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) highlighted the day for Hartwick with a 2nd place finish in the 200 individual medley. Phillips earned an NCAA B-cut time of 1:53.50 in the finals, just 0.29 seconds from the state and conference crowns. His time ranks 2nd in the 200 IM event in Hartwick history and he garners 2nd team all-Empire 8 honors.

Freshman Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) placed 12th in the event. He swam the race in 1:59.12, which ranks 9th all-time at 'Wick.

Freshman Lydon Schultz (Mount Pleasant, SC), sophomore Kaird Durocher (Bethlehem, PA), and junior William MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY) each finished in the top 20 in the 50 freestyle. Schultz's time of 22.01 seconds tied for 12th. Durocher was just .01 seconds behind in 14th, and MacElveen was 16th (22.61).

Freshman Travis Bueno (Clifton, NY) finished 22nd in the 500 freestyle event. Classmate Josh McNorton (Sanford, NC) was two spots back in 24th.

Diver Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) finished 9th in the state and 5th in the Empire 8 in the 1-meter event. He registered a score of 390.85, which was a personal best.

In the relay events, the Hawks earned a pair of top 10 finishes. In the 200 free relay, Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX), MacElveen, Schultz, and Durocher placed 8th. The quartet ended the finals with a time of 1:26.71. Phillips, Willcox, Schultz, and Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH) also combined for an 8th place showing in the 400 medley relay with a finals mark of 3:34.52.

Competition continues tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
