Riviello Nets Final Point in Victory Over Rensselaer

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Dan Riviello (Clyde, N.Y.) rallied from a four-point deficit in a second set tiebreaker for the clinching point as Hartwick downed Rensselaer 6-3 in men's tennis action, Wednesday afternoon at the Hartwick Tennis Courts.

Riviello, who trailed 6-2 in the tiebreaker, regrouped to post a 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) victory at the top portion of the lineup to give the Hawks their fifth point. Hartwick also gained singles victories as Sean Barr (Scarsdale, N.Y.), Dave Altman (Katonah, N.Y.), and Ryan Hughes (Clifton Park, N.Y.) registered decisions at four, five and six singles respectively. Barr rebounded from being a set down in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 come from behind win over Adam Generale, while Altman posted a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory over Evan Creer. With the wins, both Barr and Altman improved to 5-2 in singles action on the year. Hughes downed Jaime Fitzgerald 6-3, 6-4 at the final singles spot.

Rensselaer received victories from Ronit Kumar and Alex Franz at two and three singles respectively. Kumar downed Dan Meininger (Cassville, N.Y.) 6-1, 6-2, while Alex Franz posted a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Eric DesRoberts (Biddeford, Maine).

Hartwick, which defeated the Red Hawks for the first time in nine tries, took a 2-1 lead following doubles. The tandem of DesRoberts and Barr posted an 8-3 victory over Mike Albert and Creer at second doubles. Altman and Hughes combined to outlast Joey Redmond and Franz 8-6 at three doubles. Rensselaer won at the top doubles pairing as Riviello and Meininger bowed to Cullen and Kumar 8-3.

The Hawks, 4-3 overall, return to action Saturday afternoon as they host Empire 8 rival Nazareth at 1 p.m. In case of rain, the match will be moved to the Oneonta Tennis Club.
