Men's Tennis Edges Elmhurst in Season Opener

HILTON HEAD, SC - Freshman Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) scored a three-set victory at the number five singles spot to seal a 5-4 win for Hartwick College's men's tennis team over Elmhurst College on Sunday in the opening dual match of the season for the Hawks. With the score deadlocked at 4-4, Dumas, playing in his first collegiate match, outlasted Blue Jay Justin Guenther 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to put the Hawks in the win column.

The Hawks fell behind after doubles play to Elmhurst 2-1, but came through in singles play taking four of six matches. Freshmen Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA) and Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) each won their first career matches at 'Wick, and sophomore Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY) also earned a singles win for the Hawks.

Boyd breezed past Elmhurst's Dave Douglass in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 in number one singles. Navarro, after dropping the first set 4-6, rolled past David Devaney 6-2, 6-1 in the final two in the second flight. Barr won his fourth match in a row dating back to last year with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Jim White.

Boyd and Navarro teamed up at the number one spot to give the Hawks' their doubles victory. The pair edged out the Blue Jay tandem of Douglass and Jarrod Kec by an 8-6 count. Hartwick looks to make it two in a row on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. against the University of Northwestern (OH)
