Navarro Named Empire 8 Player of the Week

ROCHESTER, NY - Hartwick freshmen Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was named co-Empire 8 Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday as the conference office announced its weekly awards. Navarro shared the honor with Stevens Institute of Technology sophomore Piotr Rusinkiewicz.

Navarro opened his collegiate career with a 4-0 mark in singles play this past week. After coming back from a one-set deficit to win his first career match (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) over Elmhurst, he ran off three straight-set victories over Northwestern Ohio, Sioux Falls, and Lakeland. He also combined with fellow freshman Jeff Boyd (New Westbury, MA) for an 8-6 doubles win over Elmhurst.

Navarro, Boyd and the Hawks get their Empire 8 Conference schedule started this week with a trio of home matches. 'Wick hosts Elmira on Wednesday at 4 p.m., Alfred on Saturday at 1 p.m., and RIT on Sunday at 1 p.m.
