
COBLESKILL, NY - Hartwick men's tennis dropped just 12 games in nine matches in a 9-0 romp of Cobleskill on Thursday. The Hawks' first five singles players surrendered a combined three games with freshmen Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA) and Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) finishing the day with 6-0, 6-0 shutout wins. The Hawks are now 2-3 overall heading into their Empire 8 opener against Alfred on Saturday.
The Hawks got things rolling going 3-for-3 in doubles play. Navarro and Boyd combined for an 8-2 win over Cobleskill's John Hazleton and Andy Steiner. Freshman Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) and junior Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON) won their first doubles match of the season with an 8-0 shutout of Fighting Tigers Jeremy McMichael and Joe Trioani. Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY) and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY) improved to 2-3 on the season winning eight of nine games versus Julian Durante and Andrew Crane.
Boyd and Navarro found little resistance against Steiner and Hazleton in their respective singles matches. Boyd improved to 2-3 and Navarro stayed undefeated with his fifth straight victory. Barr won his third match of the year and Whitty and Dumas both picked up their second singles wins in 2009. All three lost just one game each in their matches. Del Rosario earned his first singles win in a Hartwick uniform in the sixth flight. He won by a final count of 6-2, 6-4 over Crane.
Hartwick hosts the visiting Saxons at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Hawks then entertain RIT on Sunday at 1 p.m.
