Men's Tennis Makes it Two in a Row With 8-1 Victory Over Alfred University

DELHI, NY - Hartwick won its second straight match and its Empire 8 Conference opener on Saturday in an 8-1 triumph over Alfred at SUNY Delhi's Clark Fieldhouse. The Hawks swept the six singles matches and took two of three in doubles play to earn the win. The hawks improve to 3-3 on the season. Alfred slips to 1-3 and 1-2 in conference play.

Junior Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON), sophomore Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY), and freshmen Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA), Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Peter Dumas (Albany, NY), and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY) all were victorious on the day Whitty was the only player needing three sets. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Saxon Nathan Garletts, he came back for a 6-4 win in the second set and 10-7 in the third to even up his season record at 3-3.

Del Rosario shutout out his counterpart 6-0, 6-0 for his second straight win at number six singles. Barr earned his fourth win 6-1, 6-0. Dumas got back to .500 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory and Boyd scored a 6-4, 6-1 win which was his third of the season. Navarro remained perfect at 6-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the number two slot.

In doubles play, Boyd and Navarro rolled past Connor Houghton and Nathan Kucko 8-2, and Barr and del Rosario won their match 8-2. Both Hartwick tandems now stand 3-3 on the year. Whitty and Dumas were edged in a tie-break 9-8 (7-2).

Hartwick looks to continue its winning ways on Sunday as the team hosts RIT at 1 p.m.
