RIT Knocks Off Men's Tennis Team

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's two-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday as the Hawks fell to Rochester Institute of Technology by a score of 7-2. 'Wick (3-4, 1-1 E8) drops from the unbeaten ranks in the conference with the loss. RIT improves to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the E8.

The Hawks trailed by a 2-1 deficit after doubles play with the duo of Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA) and Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) earning a win in first doubles over RIT's Joze Guzman and Clayton Tontarski, 8-4. It was Boyd and Navarro's third consecutive doubles win.

The Tigers would seal the victory winning five of the six singles competitions, including two that went three sets. Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY) scored the lone Hawks' win at the fourth singles spot with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over RIT's Max Bogue. Barr has now taken his last four matches and holds a 5-2 overall record.

Navarro dropped the first match of his collegiate career after six straight victories. He lost the first set to John Traver, 6-4 before winning the second, 6-3. Traver would take the all-important third set, 6-4 to close out the match.

Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) also was outlasted in a third set in fifth singles. Mauricio Pommier took the opening set 7-5 only to have Dumas fight back in a 7-6 (7-2) tie-break in the second set to force a deciding frame. In the third set, Pommier would prevail by a score of 10-5.

Hartwick hosts another Empire 8 opponent on Tuesday. The Hawks square off against local rival Utica College at 4 p.m.
