Hawk Tennis Team Improves to 2-1 in Empire 8 With 5-4 Win at Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY - Hartwick's men's tennis team evened its 2009 record at 4-4 and improved to 2-1 in the Empire 8 on Friday with a 5-4 victory over St. John Fisher (4-11, 2-4 E8). The Hawks are now third in the conference standings.

'Wick earned a pair of doubles wins to gain a 2-1 edge before singles play. Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA) and Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) won their fourth consecutive match in number one doubles with an 8-2 win. Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON) also picked up a hard-fought victory in second doubles winning eight games to six.

In singles play, the Hawks and Cardinals split the six matches with Boyd, Navarro, and Dumas securing the wins for 'Wick. Boyd crushed Fisher's Matt Aquino in first singles 6-0, 6-0 to even his season record at 4-4. Navarro improved to 7-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tim Adler. Dumas clinched the win for Hartwick in fifth singles 6-3, 6-4 over Jake VanBuren.

Hartwick can make it two in a row tomorrow as the team plays at Nazareth (2-4, 2-3 E8) at 1 p.m.
