Hawks' Tennis Team Falls to Unbeaten Ithaca

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's men's tennis team came up empty on Tuesday as the Hawks fell to Ithaca, the only unbeaten team left in the Empire 8. The 14-3 Bombers improved to 7-0 in the conference while the Hawks slipped to 5-5 and 3-2 in the E8 standings.

The Bombers led 3-0 after doubles play. Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA) and Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had their five-match win streak snapped by Ithaca's Taylor Borda and Josh Rifkin, 8-3. It was the IC duo's 14th victory this season.

Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON) were one game away from a win in second doubles. The Hartwick pair led 7-6 over Andrew Dunnick and Mike Muraco, but the Bombers came back with three straight games to escape with the victory.

Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY) and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY) were denied their fifth doubles win in the third spot. Ithaca's Seth Magnani and Jimmy Newton defeated them, 8-4.

In singles action, del Rosario was outlasted in three sets by Dunnick. The 'Wick freshman took set number one by a count of 6-4. Dunnick would come back for a 6-3 win in the second set and he took the tie-breaking set, 10-6.

Dumas dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Dan Levine in fifth singles while Barr fell short against Muraco 6-4, 6-3 in fourth singles. IC's number one, Borda, downed Boyd, 6-3, 6-3 to stay undefeated in Empire 8 matches, and 'Wick's Navarro lost for just the second time this season to Rifkin, who has not lost a match all season (16-0).

The Hawks are back in action at home on Thursday against rival Oneonta State. Hartwick then hosts second-place Stevens on Saturday and Elmira College on Sunday.
