Boyd Shines in Hartwick Men's Tennis Setback to Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY - Visiting Oneonta State downed Hartwick's men's tennis team on Thursday to drop the Hawks to 5-6 on the season. The Red Dragons won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to earn their 13th win of the season.

Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA) was the lone victor on the day in first singles. The freshman was impressive against Oneonta State's Adam Shapiro in a 6-2, 6-2 straight sets win. It was Boyd's fifth victory of the season and Shapiro's first loss to a Division III opponent this season.

Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dropped a tight match for just his third setback of the season in singles play, 7-5, 6-2, to Red Dragon Matt Streinhauser. Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY) lost a 6-4, 6-4 match to O-State's Adam Slifkin in fourth singles to slip to 6-5 overall.

Each of the three doubles matches were closely contested. Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON) fell two games short, 8-6, in second doubles. Boyd and Navarro slipped to 6-5 with an 8-5 loss in first doubles, and Barr and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY) were beaten 8-4 in third doubles.

The 3-2 Hawks host a pair of Empire 8 conference matches this weekend. 'Wick hosts Stevens at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Elmira on Sunday at 1 p.m. A Hawks' sweep of the second-place Ducks and the Soaring Eagles would all but seal a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament in May.
