Stevens Stops Hawks in Men's Tennis

ONEONTA, NY - Stevens Institute of Technology maintained its hold over second place in the Empire 8 on Saturday with a 9-0 win over Hartwick College. The Hawks slip to 3-3 in the conference but can take a big leap towards clinching a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament with a victory tomorrow against Elmira.

Peter Dumas (Albany, NY), playing fifth singles, was the lone 'Wick singles player to take his match into a third set against the Ducks. After losing the first set to Carlo Pardo, 6-1, the freshman responded with a 7-5 triumph in set number two. Pardo, however, would outlast Dumas in the third-set tie breaker, 11-9. Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Stevens' Jason Ringstad battled at number two singles with Ringstad prevailing, 7-5, 6-4.

The doubles teams of Dumas and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON) and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY) and Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY) each fell 8-5 in their respective matches.

The Hawks (5-7) can get back on track tomorrow with a victory tomorrow against the Soaring Eagles as a win would put 'Wick 4-3 in the standings. A victory by Stevens over Utica tomorrow would mean the Hawks would secure a berth in the Empire 8's on Wednesday as they host the Pioneers.
